Team Effectiveness

“It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.” Patrick Lencioni

If people are complex, teams are even more so. So how to get the best from your team?

According to Richard Hackman and Ruth Wageman, pioneers in the research on teams, effective teams are:

  • performing: delivering or exceeding key stakeholders’ requirements in terms of standards of quality, quantity and timeliness
  • working well together: in a way that enhances team members’ capability to work together
  • supportive: effective teams support individual members’ wellbeing, learning and growth

How does your team compare with these criteria? Likely your team is great at some things and has some work to do in other areas.

Why not assess the current effectiveness of your team with this quick self-assessment?

Typical challenges teams might be facing include:

  • Persistent low level conflict/tension
  • A newly formed team with strong personalities trying to find the most effective way to work together
  • A team facing an organisational restructure or other significant change

There are many benefits of a team taking regular time out to focus on effectiveness, including:

  • For individuals: wellbeing, support, about direction of travel, and productivity are all enhanced
  • For teams: the whole becomes more than the sum of the parts. This leads to innovations, remarkable delivery and enhanced reputation
  • For organisations: supporting team effectiveness across the board reduces sickness absence, improves staff turnover, improves collaboration, and enhances the organisation’s resilience and capacity for learning and adapting to change

My approach to enhancing team effectiveness:

  2. A discovery phase – Should you wish to proceed we will have a more in-depth discovery meeting(s) where we can properly understand your challenges and design a solution with you.
  3. Delivery phase – Based upon an agreed way forward. This might involve advice, creating resources, training, delivering workshops, individual coaching, facilitating team sessions, team coaching
  4. Follow up – Assessment of delivery effectiveness and any further advice/tools that you’d find helpful.
